Dragons are large lizard/dinosaur monster things that are quite intelligent. Most of them are able to talk.
Kratrizaniphund is one of the prominent lines of ancestry for modern dragons. There are other minor lines that have existed at one time or another. The Dragons were the most civil society of the First Order, but the constant feuding between other groups weakened their position over time until the ultimate collapse of the First Order.
