Trolls are an ancient race who are the forefathers of modern-day Goblins. They would always reside underneath bridges (or other man-made structures) and force people to do stupid shit to get across. When people got tired of their shit, the larger Bridge Trolls were killed.
The smaller types of trolls that were not allowed to work under the bridges (there was a caste system) became the dominant group of Trolls. These Trolls eventually came to call themselves Goblins, so as to not be identified with the stigma original trolls had.
