Trolls are an ancient race who are the forefathers of modern-day Goblins. They would always reside underneath bridges (or other man-made structures) and force people to do stupid shit to get across. When people got tired of their shit, the big trolls were killed and the smaller trolls that were not allowed to work under the bridges (there was a caste system) became the dominant group of Trolls were the Bridge Trolls.

These Trolls eventually came to call themselves Goblins, as they were pretty much different enough to be a different race.
